Autoflight, a Chinese startup specializing in automated Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) technology, achieved a significant milestone with the completion of a test flight at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The successful flight of the 2-ton eVTOL V2000CG marks the first test of its kind at a 4F airport, the highest classification for civil airports with advanced facilities capable of accommodating large aircraft.
According to Autoflight, the V2000CG has undergone various test flights, including research and development flights and compliance verification tests, covering scenarios from self-built sites to general aviation airports. The company’s focus on eVTOL technology aligns with the growing interest in urban air transportation solutions, thanks to features such as flexible takeoff and landing, zero carbon emissions, low noise levels, safety, and passenger comfort.
In Shanghai, a city known for its international status, the application of eVTOL aircraft could significantly reduce travel time between the airport and downtown areas. Autoflight estimates that using eVTOLs could reduce travel time from Pudong International Airport to the city center to just 10 minutes, compared to the current 60-90 minutes by ground transportation.
The V2000CG received its Type Certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) East China Regional Administration in March, making it the first eVTOL aircraft in its tonnage class and above to achieve this certification. Autoflight’s efforts in advancing eVTOL technology are further demonstrated by its ongoing work to obtain a Type Certificate for another manned eVTOL aircraft.
Established in 2017, Autoflight has been at the forefront of China’s eVTOL sector, aiming to revolutionize air logistics and air travel. The company’s achievements include securing a $100 million Series A funding round in September 2021, the largest single funding received by a Chinese eVTOL company at that time. Additionally, Autoflight completed the first flight test of its V1500M in October 2021, featuring a maximum takeoff weight of 1,500 kilograms, the capacity for 3-4 passengers, and a maximum flight range of 250 kilometers with passengers.
Autoflight’s recent test flight at Shanghai Pudong International Airport underscores the company’s commitment to advancing eVTOL technology and its potential to transform urban air transportation.
