California has committed $500 million to help school districts purchase 1,000 electric school buses and install related charging infrastructure, state officials said, as part of its ongoing efforts to cut emissions from public transportation and reduce air pollution in vulnerable communities. The funding, part of the Zero-Emission School Bus and Infrastructure (ZESBI) program, is managed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the California Energy Commission (CEC). In a statement, the agencies said 133 educational agencies across the state were awarded grants to replace aging diesel and gasoline buses with battery-electric models. Under the program, each recipient can receive…
Tesla’s new vehicle registrations in California declined by 15% in the first quarter of 2025, as the electric vehicle maker lost market share in the U.S. state that has traditionally been its stronghold, according to data released by the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA) on Wednesday. Tesla’s share of California’s battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market dropped to 43.9% from 55.5% a year earlier, marking the first time the automaker has failed to account for the majority of EV sales in the state. The overall market for zero-emission vehicles in California grew 7.3% during the same period, with brands such as…
Lucid is on schedule to launch its midsize electric SUV in 2026, company executives said on Tuesday, as the U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer seeks to gain ground in a growing segment led by Tesla’s bestselling Model Y. “There are a lot of crazy things going on in the world that can affect that [timeline]. But currently we are on track,” said Derek Jenkins, Lucid’s senior vice president. The planned SUV, priced around $50,000, is set to compete directly with other mainstream electric crossovers including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the upcoming Rivian R2. The McMurtry Spéirling Pure, a compact British electric hypercar, has set a new lap record at the Top Gear Test Track, completing a lap in 55.9 seconds—comfortably beating the 59.0-second mark set by the Renault R24 Formula 1 car in 2004. Top Gear tested the Spéirling Pure at its Dunsfold Aerodrome circuit, where the car outpaced expectations. With an acceleration time of 0–60 mph in just 1.5 seconds and the ability to generate over 2,000 kg (4,400 lbs) of downforce from a proprietary fan system, the Spéirling displayed cornering speeds that exceeded even those of Formula 1 vehicles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDfKhBcGh9w Developed…
Tesla has responded to mounting scrutiny in Canada over an unusual spike in electric vehicle sales that coincided with the end of the country’s federal EV rebate program. The company is under investigation after four of its stores reportedly sold 8,653 vehicles over a three-day period in March, triggering claims for approximately C$43.1 million (US$30 million) in government incentives. The volume of sales—averaging 30 vehicles per hour at each location, 24 hours a day, even during closing hours—has raised questions among critics and officials about the legitimacy of the transactions. Some have accused Tesla of attempting to exploit the rebate…
A Senate vote has blocked Republican efforts to overturn California’s plan to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles from 2035, preserving the state’s authority to enforce stricter emissions standards under the federal Clean Air Act. The move follows a failed attempt to use the Congressional Review Act to nullify California’s exemption, though a similar measure may still advance in the House of Representatives within a limited time window. The exemption, which dates back to the Nixon administration, allows California to adopt more stringent vehicle emissions standards due to its long-standing air quality problems. According to The New York Times,…
Comett Plus, a public transport operator based in Tábor, Czech Republic, has rolled out 14 electric buses and electrified two depots, marking the country’s first deployment of electric buses in regular scheduled service. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with German energy company E.ON and Finnish charging technology provider Kempower, is intended to significantly cut emissions and modernize local transit operations. The electric fleet has been operational since December, comprising eight Solaris Urbino 12 buses for city routes and six Iveco Crossway LE buses for intercity travel. Over the course of a year, the new fleet is expected to cover…
