BMW is moving ahead with plans to bring its first production hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle to market by 2028, despite slowing consumer interest in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and a renewed focus on hybrid and combustion engine development across the automotive industry. The German automaker confirmed that the hydrogen-powered model will likely be based on the next-generation X5 SUV. BMW has previously introduced only hydrogen prototypes, including the iX5 fuel-cell vehicle revealed in 2024. “We believe the timing is right,” said Dr. Jürgen Guldner, General Program Manager for Hydrogen Technology at BMW, in an interview with Driving Hydrogen. “Since we’ve been…

The decision marks a significant divestment by one of Sweden’s largest pension funds, which said it had engaged with Tesla for several years on the issue but found the company’s response inadequate. The electric vehicle maker accounted for about 1% of AP7’s equity fund before the divestment. “AP7 has decided to blacklist Tesla due to verified violations of…

Global sales of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles climbed 24% in May compared to a year earlier, reaching 1.6 million units, according to market research firm Rho Motion. China’s EV sales rose more than 24%…
A coalition of 11 U.S. states led by California filed a lawsuit on Thursday challenging the repeal of federal waivers that allowed the state to enforce its ambitious electric vehicle (EV) and emissions regulations, including a planned 2035 ban on new gasoline-only vehicle sales. The repeals target California’s zero-emission vehicle mandates and diesel engine restrictions. “We officially rescue the U.S. auto industry from destruction by terminating the California electric vehicle mandate once…
