In a bid to enhance its environmental footprint, the Österreichische Post (Austrian Post) has rolled out its ‘Green Salzburg’ project, marking a significant step towards CO2-free delivery. The initiative, which encompasses parcels, letters, print media, and advertising mail, boasts 193 electric vehicles traversing the last mile, reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.

The Austrian Post’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond vehicle electrification. With 126 charging stations strategically placed, the company ensures its electric fleet remains operational with green electricity sourced from both its photovoltaic systems and Austria’s renewable energy sources. This project, amounting to a substantial six million euros investment, underscores the company’s dedication to eco-friendly logistics solutions.

Peter Umundum, Chief Parcel & Logistics Officer at Österreichische Post AG, emphasized the significance of the ‘Green Salzburg’ project, stating, “Our strong commitment to sustainable logistics is gradually becoming visible in Austria. Salzburg is now the third provincial capital, after Graz and Innsbruck, where we deliver CO2-free. We cover around 1.9 million kilometres in Salzburg annually using purely electric vehicles, saving more than 180,000 litres of diesel.”

The company’s ambitious goal is to achieve CO2-free delivery nationwide by 2030, a testament to its long-term environmental stewardship. Despite facing challenges in specific delivery zones, like the Mönchsberg district in Salzburg, where specialized vehicles are required, the Austrian Post remains steadfast in its pursuit of sustainable practices. To overcome such challenges, the company plans to utilize Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO), a renewable fuel, once it becomes available in Salzburg.

While focusing primarily on battery-electric drives, the Austrian Post continues to innovate its fleet. In 2023, the company placed an order for 703 electric vans from the Chinese SAIC commercial vehicle brand Maxus, further expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. With over 4,000 electric vehicles now in operation, including e-bikes, electric cargo bikes, electric mopeds, trikes, and vans, the Austrian Post stands as a beacon of sustainable delivery practices.

The company’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its decision to convert its trucks to the renewable fuel HVO. Already covering more than 5,000 kilometres a day in the province of Salzburg, these trucks represent a crucial step towards reducing carbon emissions in the logistics sector.

As the Austrian Post continues to pioneer eco-friendly logistics solutions, its ‘Green Salzburg’ project serves as a model for sustainable delivery practices, setting a new standard for the industry.
