Austrian Post has completed the transition to fully emission-free deliveries in Vienna, making the Austrian capital the first major European city where packages, letters, newspapers, magazines and advertising materials are delivered entirely without direct CO2 emissions.

The milestone marks the completion of a strategy that initially targeted full electrification by the end of 2025. Although achieved slightly later than planned, the company has now officially switched all last-mile deliveries in Vienna to electric vehicles and other emission-free transport methods.

The launch was celebrated at Vienna’s Heldenplatz with actor and environmental advocate Arnold Schwarzenegger, who attended ahead of the Austrian World Summit climate conference.

Around 1,000 Electric Vehicles in Operation

Austrian Post has steadily expanded its electric fleet over recent years. The company operated around 700 electric delivery vehicles in Vienna in 2025, a figure that has now grown to approximately 1,000 units.

In addition to electric vans, deliveries are also carried out using e-bikes, electric mopeds and on-foot delivery routes.

According to the company, the electric fleet covers around eight million kilometers annually across Vienna, eliminating approximately 2,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

€32 Million Investment

To support the transition, Austrian Post invested roughly €32 million in charging infrastructure and electric vehicles.

The investment forms part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy aimed at reducing emissions from logistics operations while improving urban air quality.

Arnold Schwarzenegger praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of electric mobility in reducing transport-related emissions.

“The consistent expansion of its electric logistics fleet demonstrates just how seriously Austrian Post is taking the transition to a low-emission future. E-mobility is a crucial path forward globally, and every investment in this area is worthwhile,” Schwarzenegger said.

Supporting Vienna’s Climate Goals

Vienna city officials described the transition as an important contribution to the city’s climate-neutrality ambitions.

Jürgen Czernohorszky, Vienna’s City Councillor for Climate, said cooperation between businesses and local government has played a key role in reducing emissions across the city.

“The fact that Austrian Post is transitioning its fleet to post-fossil fuel vehicles represents a significant contribution to climate neutrality and, consequently, to maintaining the quality of life in Vienna,” Czernohorszky said.

He noted that carbon emissions in Vienna have fallen by more than one-third since 2005, partly due to collaborative sustainability initiatives.

Expansion Across Austria

While Austrian Post had already introduced CO2-free deliveries in smaller cities including Graz, Innsbruck and Salzburg, Vienna represents a much larger operational challenge due to its population of nearly two million residents.

The company is now pursuing its next objective: achieving emission-free last-mile deliveries throughout Austria by 2030.

Austrian Post currently operates more than 6,000 electric vehicles nationwide, making it the country’s largest electric fleet operator.

With Vienna now fully served by electric and zero-emission delivery solutions, Austrian Post has established one of Europe’s largest urban electric logistics networks and taken another step toward its long-term decarbonization goals.
