Audi has confirmed the new RS 5 as the first model from Audi Sport to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, marking a significant step in the brand’s performance electrification strategy.
The new RS 5 combines a twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine with an electric motor in what Audi describes as a Power PHEV configuration. The vehicle is scheduled to go on sale across European markets from the end of June 2025, with customer orders and configuration already open.
Audi Sport Introduces Its First Plug-In Hybrid RS Model
The RS 5 represents a milestone for Audi Sport as the performance division begins integrating electrified technologies into its RS portfolio.
Audi said the model pairs high-performance combustion technology with electric assistance to deliver enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics while retaining the characteristics expected from the RS lineup.
The vehicle also features an updated quattro all-wheel-drive system incorporating electromechanical torque vectoring technology, allowing drive torque to be distributed individually between the rear wheels to improve handling and stability.
Development Shared Between Germany and Hungary
Development of the RS 5 powertrain was split between Audi’s engineering center in Neckarsulm, Germany, and Audi Hungaria in Győr, Hungary.
Audi’s Neckarsulm team was responsible for engine development and validation, while Audi Hungaria assumed responsibility for continuous engineering and series production following the completion of the pre-production phase.
The company said the project relied on close cooperation between both sites throughout the development process.
“Developing a high-performance vehicle like the RS 5 is only possible with clearly structured processes and well-coordinated workflows. We can draw on years of shared experience. This provides certainty for the project and speeds up decision-making,” said Sascha Srebacic, Head of Engine Mechanics at Audi’s Neckarsulm site.
Formal Development Process Supports Production Readiness
According to Audi, the two engineering teams conduct milestone workshops on an alternating basis and formally transfer responsibilities through documented handover procedures.
The company said this structured approach helps ensure continuity throughout development and production while maintaining quality standards across multiple projects.
“Cooperation throughout all phases of development, from the initial concept to series production, is a key factor in the success of the RS 5. The official handover, complete with a written record and signatures, is a very important milestone for everyone involved,” said Richard Majer, Project Coordinator in Technical Development at Audi Hungaria.
Audi indicated that the development framework established between Neckarsulm and Győr continues to serve as a model for future performance vehicle projects as the company expands its electrified lineup.
