Ascend Elements has begun Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States, the battery recycling startup said on Friday, in a setback for investors who had committed nearly $900 million to the company.

Chief Executive Linh Austin announced the decision in a LinkedIn post late Thursday, saying Ascend faced “insurmountable” financial challenges.

The bankruptcy filing comes as the U.S. electric vehicle market experiences slower growth following a surge in purchases ahead of the expiration of federal EV tax credits last September. Industry analysts have said some consumers accelerated purchases to secure incentives, contributing to weaker subsequent demand.

Ascend’s financial position was also likely affected by the cancellation of a $316 million U.S. government grant tied to the construction of its Kentucky battery materials facility. Of that amount, $204 million had already been disbursed, leaving the company to seek additional capital to complete the project.

Ascend has developed a recycling process designed to recover critical minerals from scrap and end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, converting shredded battery waste into precursor materials for new cathodes with fewer processing steps.

The company’s filing highlights the challenges facing battery recycling and materials startups as they compete in a capital-intensive market shaped by long automotive development cycles, shifting customer specifications, and pricing pressure from Chinese producers that dominate global battery materials supply.

Other recycling companies have sought to diversify their business models to offset those pressures. Redwood Materials, for example, has expanded into repurposing used battery packs for grid-scale energy storage systems, targeting demand from sectors such as data centers while continuing to build its battery recycling operations.
