Apple has added a new feature to its Maps app that enables users to initiate electric vehicle charging sessions directly at participating stations, following a partnership with German data service provider Cirrantic.
The integration of Cirrantic’s Charging Wallet is intended to simplify the process of locating, comparing, and paying for charging services without the need for additional apps or registrations.
The Charging Wallet consolidates available payment options at each charging station, including ad hoc tariffs, roaming prices from registered providers, and subscription-based rates.
Users can compare these prices in real time and choose the most cost-effective option. Payment methods such as Apple Pay, credit cards, or mobile phone billing are supported within the wallet.
“Transparent pricing, real-time monitoring of the charging process and automatic billing ensure a first-class user experience,” Cirrantic said in a LinkedIn post. The company added that the integration could also benefit charging point operators by increasing station visibility through Apple Maps, potentially attracting new customers who may not have otherwise downloaded dedicated charging apps.
Initially, the feature will be available at Citywatt, Jolt Energy, DA emobil, and Illwerke VKW stations in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Cirrantic said additional providers are expected to join in the future, with the system also enabling the implementation of flexible or dynamic pricing models.
