Amsterdam will add 40 fully electric DAF XD trucks to its municipal waste collection fleet in 2026, in a move aimed at reducing emissions and improving air quality in the Dutch capital, the city said on Tuesday.

The order includes DAF XD Electric 6×2 FAN models supplied through dealer Truckland, with bodywork provided in part by VDL-Translift. The trucks will feature four different body types, including rear-end loaders, front loaders, and crane and hook lift vehicles, allowing the municipality to collect a wide range of waste without emissions.

The vehicles will be equipped with three 105 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, chosen for their safety, long lifespan and ability to charge to full capacity without performance loss. Power will be delivered by electric motors rated at 170 kW or 220 kW, with an additional 90 kW ePTO to operate collection equipment.

Amsterdam highlighted the trucks’ urban suitability, citing low entry steps, wide visibility, and safety features such as the DAF Corner View camera for monitoring cyclists and pedestrians. The ex-factory bodybuilder-friendly design, with flexible battery placement, was also noted as a deciding factor in the purchase.

Roland Heijnen, Director of Waste and Resources for the Municipality of Amsterdam, said: “We are pleased with the cooperation with DAF dealer Truckland and have full confidence in a sustainable future with these electric waste trucks in Amsterdam.”
