Australian fuel retailer Ampol has agreed to acquire electric vehicle charging operator Evie Networks for AU$225 million (approximately €135 million), expanding its charging infrastructure across the country.
Ampol subsidiary Ampol Energy has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of Fast Cities Australia, the company operating Evie Networks. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close during the first half of 2027.
The acquisition would add more than 1,030 charging bays to Ampol’s existing network, bringing the combined network to around 1,425 bays across more than 400 sites.
Ampol Expands EV Charging Footprint
Ampol said the acquisition will strengthen its position in Australia’s growing electric vehicle charging market by providing access to additional established locations, long-term site agreements and existing grid connections.
The two charging networks are expected to continue operating independently until completion of the transaction.
Ampol CEO and Managing Director Matt Halliday said the company intends to maintain a measured approach to investment in EV charging infrastructure.
“For Ampol, EV charging is ultimately a question of disciplined investment at the right time. That means closely monitoring customer behaviour, EV uptake, site economics, grid connections and the broader charging network to ensure our capital is deployed where it can create the greatest value.”
Halliday added that Evie’s established sites could allow Ampol to expand its charging network while making use of existing infrastructure.
“Evie’s high quality, attractive long-term tenure sites with established grid connections and some with expansion capacity, provides Ampol with an opportunity to grow its charging footprint at scale and at pace.”
Ampol Continues AmpCharge Expansion
The Evie acquisition follows Ampol’s broader expansion of its AmpCharge EV charging network across Australia.
In February, Ampol installed Australia’s first 400 kW ABB A400 ultra-fast chargers at a site along Sydney’s M4 motorway. The facility features 10 charging bays and is designed to accommodate electric trucks and larger vehicles.
The infrastructure forms part of Ampol’s efforts to expand charging capacity at locations that can serve a wider range of electric vehicles.
Evie Develops Nationwide Fast-Charging Network
Evie Networks has been developing a nationwide fast-charging network connecting major Australian cities.
Its initial rollout plan included more than 80 ultra-fast charging stations across 42 locations. The company has also reported strong growth in charging activity across its existing network.
During the first half of 2026, charging sessions increased by 116% compared with the same period a year earlier, while the amount of energy supplied rose by 120%.
The acquisition would give Ampol access to Evie’s established charging locations and network infrastructure, while combining the two companies’ existing footprints would significantly increase Ampol’s presence in Australia’s expanding EV charging market.
