ABB has introduced a new, more energy-efficient motor and converter package designed for electric buses. The package integrates the compact AMXE250 permanent magnet synchronous motor with the HES580 inverter, which ABB claims is the first 3-level inverter on the market for electric buses.

According to ABB, the new inverter offers a longer service life and can achieve up to twelve per cent lower motor losses in typical driving cycles compared to previous 2-level inverters. The HES580 is designed to reduce harmonic losses of the motor by up to 75 per cent, significantly reducing heat dissipation and maximizing energy savings.

The key innovation in the HES580 lies in its use of a 3-level topology, which introduces a neutral conductor as a third voltage level. This allows for a reduction in current ripple and subsequently lower harmonic losses compared to traditional 2-level inverters, which switch between two voltage levels (DC+ and DC-).

“The motor-inverter package has been designed to work in perfect harmony and will bring significant energy efficiency gains for operators and OEMs alike,” said David Segbers, Global Product Manager at ABB’s Traction division.

The AMXE250 motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor known for its high torque density and quiet operation, making it ideal for electric buses where passenger comfort is a priority. The motor is expected to operate with improved efficiency and offer higher performance under various operating conditions.

“Electrifying buses in this way is a key part of bringing sustainable, clean public transport that improves the quality of life,” said Fabiana Cavalcante, Global Head of Mobile e-Power at ABB. “We’re thrilled to provide future-proof solutions that help the industry meet their sustainability and performance objectives.”
