Mercedes-AMG has commenced trials for its upcoming electric SUV, which is set to be built on the newly introduced AMG.EA platform. The initial phase of testing will take place in northern Sweden, where the model will undergo winter trials on both test sites and public roads.

This yet-to-be-named electric SUV is the second vehicle to be developed on the AMG.EA platform, following the announcement of a four-door coupé earlier this year, which also began its testing cycle in Sweden. While Mercedes-AMG has shared an image of a heavily camouflaged prototype, further details about the SUV remain scarce.

The company has highlighted the vehicle’s focus on high-performance, showcasing axial-flux motors and a new high-performance battery concept, although no specific performance figures have been disclosed.

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, previously noted that the platform’s guiding philosophy is ‘AMG First, EV Second,’ emphasizing that performance will take precedence, potentially at the expense of efficiency and range.

Despite this, the company has also pointed to the Vision EQXX technology platform, known for its remarkable efficiency, suggesting a balance between high performance and energy efficiency. The exact capabilities of the vehicle remain to be seen.

The prototype, though still heavily camouflaged, bears typical Mercedes design features. The bonnet is similar to that of the Mercedes EQE SUV, though with some differences in aerodynamics, including a distinctive bead on the bumper. The roofline and side profile also echo the EQE SUV, with features like retractable door handles being visible even under the camouflage.
