Electric truck startup OX Delivers has signed a $163 million multi-year agreement to bring its electric “trucks-as-a-service” vehicles to East Africa, marking a significant step in the company’s mission to expand e-mobility in the Global South. The deal will create a new franchise venture, OX East Africa, which will supply electric trucks, provide access to OX Delivers’ tech platform, and offer vehicle maintenance services across several East African nations.
The agreement will focus on strengthening OX Delivers’ operations in Rwanda while expanding into Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi to meet the growing demand for its electric trucks. Simon Davis, Co-Founder and CEO of OX Delivers, highlighted the success in Rwanda as a key factor in the company’s expansion plans. “The huge potential that our services have unlocked in Rwanda highlight the opportunity to replicate this in the neighboring countries,” said Davis. “Through this franchise partnership, we will expand into new markets and continue our mission to supercharge trade across the Global South.”
OX Delivers is positioning its trucks as the first purpose-built electric vehicles tailored for the needs of developing regions. This year, the company reported its best performance yet, generating more than $920,000 in revenue through October. The electric trucks feature a 74 kWh battery, providing over 90 miles (150 km) of range and a 4,400 lb. (2000 kg) payload capacity. The trucks are designed to be shipped in flat-pack form for local assembly at or near their deployment destination.
This move comes as part of OX Delivers’ broader strategy to bring sustainable, cost-effective electric transportation to emerging markets in Africa, offering a solution for local businesses while contributing to the region’s environmental goals.
