Lucid Motors has initiated a recall affecting over 1,500 of its 2024 and 2025 Air Pure sedans in Canada and the United States after identifying a defect that could lead to a complete loss of drive power. The recall, issued under Transport Canada Recall #2024-673 and NHTSA Recall No. 24V-836, specifically targets Air Pure Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles.
The issue stems from a shortened rear subframe wiring harness, which was inadvertently produced with a reduced length due to a documentation error. This design flaw causes excessive stress on the harness connector, increasing the likelihood of intermittent or total disconnection. “If the connector disconnects completely, a loss of power to the rear drive unit will occur,” Lucid stated. “This could lead to a significant risk of crash due to the absence of motive power, though critical systems such as power steering and braking remain functional.”
The recall includes 7 vehicles in Canada and 1,539 in the U.S. Lucid’s submission to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that approximately 0.4% of the affected vehicles have experienced an unwarned loss of power. The manufacturing defect arose during the installation of shortened wiring harnesses between November 29, 2023, and October 17, 2024. Since October 17, 2024, all Lucid Air vehicles have been produced with the corrected wiring harness design.
Owners of the affected vehicles will receive a replacement of the wiring harnesses, which will be fitted with components of the original length at no cost. Warning messages will also appear in the vehicles before a potential power loss, such as: “Drive System Warning: Contact Customer Care,” “Drive System Fault: Contact Customer Care,” and “Battery System Fault: Vehicle powering down in 2 minutes.”
Lucid has committed to addressing the issue and has emphasized that its production for future vehicles remains unaffected by the recall. The Air Pure RWD, Lucid’s entry-level model, starts at C$96,800 or US$69,900. In the third quarter of 2024, the company delivered 2,781 vehicles, marking its best quarter to date, and continues to target 9,000 vehicle deliveries by the end of the year.
