Nissan introduced its latest electric vehicle, the N7 sedan, at the Guangzhou Auto Show this week, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to reclaim ground in China’s competitive electric vehicle (EV) market. This new model represents the first of Nissan’s next-generation EVs built specifically for China under its renewed approach to the region, following declining sales in recent years.

The N7 is built on Dongfeng Nissan’s newly developed EV platform and is designed to be a mainstream family sedan for the Chinese market. At 4,930 mm long, 1,895 mm wide, and 1,487 mm tall, the N7 is slightly larger than Tesla’s Model 3, offering enhanced interior space. The vehicle features Nissan’s signature V-Motion design in its front headlights and bumpers, while the interior is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295p processor powering the infotainment system.

“The N7 will redefine the new benchmark for China’s mainstream family pure electric sedans,” Nissan claims, highlighting the car’s superior comfort, stress-free driving experience, and advanced intelligent technology. The N7 will also come with an advanced driver-assistance system developed in partnership with Momenta, featuring technologies such as Navigate on Autopilot, city memory navigation, and intelligent parking capabilities.

The N7 EV is scheduled to launch in China in the first half of 2025, as Nissan attempts to regain market share after seeing a 5.4% drop in sales in the first nine months of 2024, following a significant 33% decline in 2023. With domestic automakers like BYD and NIO gaining dominance, Nissan faces an uphill battle to recapture the attention of Chinese consumers.

As part of a broader effort to stay competitive in China, Nissan is not alone in developing region-specific EVs. Hyundai is also planning to launch a new AI-powered EV in China next year, reflecting the growing pressure on foreign automakers to adapt to the country’s rapidly evolving EV market.
