Tesla announced on Wednesday a recall of 2,431 of its recently launched Cybertruck electric pickups in the United States, citing a potential loss of drive power as the reason for the recall. This issue marks the sixth Cybertruck recall in 2023, and follows a similar move last month when Tesla recalled over 27,000 Cybertrucks due to delayed rear-view camera images that posed risks to driver visibility.

According to Tesla’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Cybertrucks manufactured between Nov. 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024, could experience a fault in the drive inverter.

This fault may prevent the inverter from generating torque when the driver presses the accelerator, causing a sudden loss of propulsion and raising the risk of an accident. Tesla stated it will replace the defective inverters with fully functional ones at no cost to owners.

Tesla began delivering the highly anticipated Cybertruck this year, following a two-year delay attributed to production and battery supply challenges. However, the company has yet to release specific production or delivery numbers for the vehicle, which represents a major addition to Tesla’s lineup.

With a design inspired by the sci-fi aesthetic of “Blade Runner,” the Cybertruck was intended to inject fresh appeal into Tesla’s product range amid slower EV market growth. However, the truck’s high development costs and delays have drawn increased scrutiny from investors, who are eager to see how this high-stakes addition will perform in the competitive EV landscape.
