BYD, China’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is eyeing Australia as the next market for its budget-friendly Seagull EV.
The Seagull, which retails for under $10,000 (69,800 yuan) in China, has become a best-seller, topping monthly EV sales charts in China since March and recently surpassing 400,000 units sold.
BYD’s expansion efforts are clear as it introduces the compact Seagull, branded overseas as the Dolphin Mini, in markets such as Mexico and Brazil, where it remains one of the most affordable EVs with starting prices around $20,000.
David Smith, CEO of BYD’s Australian importer, EVDirect, recently confirmed that the company plans to add a model smaller than the Dolphin to the lineup, with the Seagull seen as a strong candidate.
As Australia’s EV market grows, BYD aims to compete on both price and innovation. The Seagull is offered in two battery configurations in China, featuring ranges of up to 252 miles (405 km) and showcasing advanced technology, including a 10.1-inch rotating infotainment screen with DiLink connectivity.
Alongside the Seagull, BYD has also announced plans to launch additional models, including the Shark PHEV pickup and mid-size Sealion 7 SUV, with high-end models from BYD’s Denza and Yangwang brands also set to arrive.
