Indonesia plans to export nickel-based materials essential for electric vehicle batteries to the United States, with the shipment expected to commence next month.
Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the material, referred to as EV battery precursor, will be supplied to U.S. electric car manufacturer Tesla. However, specific details regarding the volume of the export were not disclosed.
“We will export precursor to the U.S. by next month to Tesla, from Weda Bay,” Bahlil stated. This move marks a significant step in Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen its electric vehicle industry.
Previously, Indonesia had reported successful exports of EV precursors to China. The Indonesian government has been actively pursuing the development of its electric vehicle sector, leveraging the country’s abundant nickel reserves, which are crucial for producing EV batteries.
The government has also sought to attract Tesla to invest in local battery manufacturing and car production facilities.
