Tesla officially unveiled its highly anticipated Robotaxi, the Cybercab, on October 10, during a live event at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles. This fully autonomous vehicle is set to revolutionize passenger travel, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
With production expected before 2027 and a starting price of under $30,000, the Cybercab promises to be an affordable and innovative solution for the future of transportation.
The Cybercab’s design immediately caught the attention of attendees and viewers during Tesla’s “We, Robot” event. Inspired by the Cybertruck, the vehicle features a futuristic front design with sleek curves reminiscent of Tesla’s other models.
Aero covers partially extending into the tires give the Cybercab an advanced, energy-efficient look, and it rides on 225/60/R21 tires at the rear. Though specific dimensions were not provided, attendees reported that the passenger area is spacious, and press photos suggest ample cargo space that could exceed the Model 3’s capacity.
One of the key innovations of the Cybercab is its charging system. Unlike Tesla’s standard vehicles, which use the NACS port, the Cybercab will feature an inductive charging system, a wireless technology that Tesla has been developing for some time. The company’s acquisition of Wiferion last year further hints at Tesla’s push toward more advanced, contactless charging options for its fleet.
Musk emphasized that the Cybercab will be priced below $30,000, making it an attractive option for fleet owners and businesses. However, only the driverless version was unveiled at the event.
Reports suggest that Tesla may also develop a version with a steering wheel and pedals for markets like Asia and Europe. Production is expected to begin by 2026, potentially at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility, utilizing the company’s “unboxed” manufacturing process.
With real-world tests of Tesla’s Unsupervised Full Self Driving (FSD) slated for 2024 in California and Texas, the Cybercab marks a significant step toward a future of fully autonomous, affordable electric vehicles.
