Hyundai is set to launch its first small electric vehicle (EV) in Europe, with the new Hyundai INSTER EV aimed at challenging low-cost electric cars in the UK. Hyundai announced that prices for the INSTER EV will start at under $31,000 (£23,495), offering a competitive option in the urban EV market.

Unveiled in June as the Casper Electric in Korea, the INSTER EV features Hyundai’s latest design elements, including a pixelated front bumper inspired by the IONIQ models, LED daytime running lights, and pixel-graphic turn signals to complement the car’s modern look. Hyundai says the INSTER offers “segment-leading driving range” of up to 229 miles, making it a standout in its class. According to the company, the INSTER EV “redefines what is possible from a small urban EV.”

Despite its compact size—3,825 mm long, 1,610 mm wide, and 1,575 mm tall—the INSTER EV boasts an extended body and wheelbase, ensuring plenty of interior space for city driving. The electric city car is designed to appeal to customers looking for an affordable EV with advanced features. Hyundai’s Genesis UK President, Ashley Andrew, noted the strong initial response: “Our retailer partners and their customers have already enjoyed a sneak preview on our INSTER Roadshow, and early feedback suggests that the combination of design, equipment, and price point is already generating excitement in the showrooms.”

The INSTER EV will come in two trims, starting with the 01 trim priced at $30,800 (£23,495), and the 02 trim priced at $35,000 (£26,745), which adds features like LED projection headlamps, privacy glass, and a sliding rear bench. However, Hyundai has confirmed that the INSTER EV will not be launching in the U.S. market, while its sister company Kia will bring the EV3 to the U.S., expected to start between $30,000 to $35,000 next year.
