Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. is gearing up to unveil its maiden electric vehicle (EV) at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January next year, with plans to export the model to Japan and Europe, according to a report by the Shizuoka Shimbun.
“Suzuki, which holds a 58.2% stake in the local joint venture, announced the news at its annual general meeting on 27 June,” the Japanese newspaper reported.
The upcoming EV, anticipated to be a mass-production model, was previously previewed as the eVX small SUV concept at Auto Expo 2023. Maruti Suzuki intends to manufacture the electric vehicle on a new assembly line dedicated to EVs at its facility in Hansalpur, Gujarat, following an investment of ₹32 billion (~ €357 million).
“Maruti Suzuki will export the upcoming pure electric small SUV from India to Europe and Japan, making it a global model,” reported The Hindu Businessline, quoting Chairman Ravindra Chandra Bhargava.
The eVX, built on a dedicated EV platform, boasts dimensions of 4,300 mm length, 1,800 mm width, and 1,600 mm height. The concept showcased a 60 kWh battery pack promising a range of up to 550 km, with potential for all-wheel drive capability in the production version.
“During the company’s Q3 FY2024 investor conference call, Chief Investor Relations Officer Rahul Bharti stated that it will have a 60 kWh battery pack and deliver a range of ‘almost 550 km,'” the report added.
Maruti Suzuki aims to position the eVX as a direct competitor to the Hyundai Creta EV, targeting a competitive edge in the burgeoning electric SUV segment.
The Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, scheduled from 17 to 22 January, is expected to serve as the stage for Maruti Suzuki’s global debut of its electric vehicle lineup, marking a significant stride in India’s electric mobility transition.
