German automotive supplier ElringKlinger has announced plans to establish a new Group site in Easley, Pickens County, in northwest South Carolina. The facility will primarily manufacture battery technology products and is set to become a key battery hub for the American market.

The initial phase of the project will cover an area of 21,000 square meters, with provisions for future expansion. ElringKlinger aims to gradually develop the site into its central battery center for North America, with operations scheduled to commence by mid-2025. The facility will initially produce cell contacting systems for an unnamed launch customer.

The location in South Carolina was strategically chosen due to its central position between major automotive production hubs in Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. ElringKlinger also highlighted the region’s highly qualified labor market, supported by renowned institutions like Clemson University.

“The new site is the next step for ElringKlinger in the implementation of its SHAPE30 transformation strategy. The American market generally offers great potential for e-mobility applications, and we have already received a first high-volume series nomination,” explained CEO Thomas Jessulat. “When it comes to unlocking this potential, the US state of South Carolina is an optimal starting point for the establishment of the Group’s Battery Center Americas, as yesterday’s talks with Governor McMaster once again underlined.”
