Volkswagen of America has announced a collaboration with Denver-based Wrapmate to introduce an online 3D configurator tool, allowing owners of the upcoming ID. Buzz electric vehicle to design their own custom vehicle wraps. The announcement was strategically timed to coincide with the second annual International Volkswagen Bus Day on June 2, a celebration of all things VW bus, past and present.

Wrapmate specializes in purchasing, designing, printing, and installing vehicle wraps across the United States. The new Wrapmate 3D configurator, set to launch in beta on June 2, will enable future ID. Buzz drivers to visualize and create custom wraps and decals online in real-time.

Starting in the fall of 2024, customers will be able to order the custom wraps they designed either online or through their local VW dealership. Wrapmate will produce all custom graphics using premium 3M vinyl for durability and vibrant color quality. The company boasts a network of over 2,000 certified installers nationwide.

As part of the program, Volkswagen will introduce artist- and brand-partner-designed special releases through Wrapmate. The first design, titled “Love the Earth,” is by visual artist Dr. Bob Hieronimus. The design features the words “Love the Earth” written in 25 languages, including two indigenous languages, Māori and Navajo, covering the ID. Buzz.

In spring 2023, Hieronimus provided VW with a sketch of the ID. Buzz adorned with the special design. Volkswagen sees this collaboration as an opportunity to promote global unity and a more loving relationship with the Earth. Hieronimus has a deep connection with VW buses, having famously painted the original 1963 Standard Microbus in 1968, which became the iconic symbol of the Woodstock Art and Music Fair.

The ID. Buzz is set to launch in the US later this year as a 2025 model, featuring three trims: Pro S, Pro S Plus, and a launch-only 1st Edition. It will be equipped with a 91 kWh battery and 282 horsepower for RWD models, with 4Motion AWD models offering a maximum horsepower of 335. Volkswagen plans to announce the range and pricing closer to the launch date.
