Avatr, the Chinese premium electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer backed by Changan, Huawei, and CATL, is poised to unveil a new model, adding to its lineup alongside the existing 11 SUVs and 12 gran coupe flagships. The new electrified SUV, rumored to be called the Avatr 15, was showcased in camouflaged prototypes, hinting at its design and features.
The teaser images reveal a striking design with familiar styling cues from its predecessors. The split headlights, reminiscent of the Avatr 11, and the sleek taillights akin to the Avatr 12, suggest a blend of evolutionary design elements. Some prototypes feature mirror-replacing cameras, while others retain conventional mirrors, adding to the anticipation surrounding the new model’s final design.
While details are scarce due to the camouflage wrap, there are hints that the SUV may feature unique elements such as a rear windscreen-less design, similar to the Avatr 12. Additionally, there’s speculation about the inclusion of a hood-mounted display for communication with other road users when the vehicle is parked, adding to its innovative features.
One of the prototypes showcased sports a retractable awning, roof rack, and a trailer hitch, suggesting a rugged, adventurous character. The camouflage wrap also reveals details like 22-inch alloy wheels and the photoshoot location in Mongolia, further enhancing the vehicle’s appeal.
Chinese media reports indicate that the Avatr 15 will debut in the second quarter of 2024, positioning it as a competitor to Tesla’s Model Y. It is expected to be smaller than Avatr’s existing SUVs, offering a more compact option for consumers.
In addition to the Avatr 15, the company is also developing another model, possibly a low-slung sedan targeting the Tesla Model 3. Reports suggest that Avatr plans to offer range-extender variants of its entire range alongside its existing battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), aiming to expand its market reach and boost sales.
Avatr’s expansion plans extend beyond China, with a focus on Southeast Asian markets such as Thailand and later the United Arab Emirates. The brand is expected to enter the European market around 2026-2027, with potential plans for North America. The Avatr design center in Munich, Germany, reflects the brand’s global aspirations.
