Inverted, a UK-based firm renowned for its electrified Range Rovers, has revealed its latest venture: a project centered around the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. This classic off-roader from the 1960s receives a complete electric powertrain conversion as part of a meticulous restoration process, offering a range of customization options for potential buyers.
The electrification process involves replacing the original noisy internal combustion engine (ICE) with a single electric motor seamlessly integrated into the original gearbox. This motor delivers 215 horsepower (160 kW / 218 PS) and 250 lb-ft (339 Nm) of torque.

While the Toyota’s manual shifter remains, it now offers smoother engagement in any gear and adjustable torque levels. Drivers can effortlessly switch between 2WD and 4WD, with the added feature of an electrically operated locking differential.
For those seeking more power, an optional Tesla-sourced electric powertrain is available, boasting an impressive 320 horsepower (238 kW / 324 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. However, this option requires permanent 4WD and eliminates the manual gearbox.

“Inverted’s enhancement allows the FJ to smoothly start in any gear, with varying levels of torque, courtesy of the electric motor,” explains the tuner. Energy is stored in a 53 kWh battery pack, offering a maximum driving range of 150 miles (241 km) and compatibility with CCS chargers of up to 75 kW, allowing for a 20 to 80 percent charge in just 25 minutes.
Chassis upgrades include an enhanced Old Man Emu suspension and large disc brakes from Toyota or Wilwood. The restoration project is available for the short (FJ40), middle (FJ43), and long (FJ45) wheelbase versions of the Land Cruiser, with various body styles including hardtop, soft top, station wagon, or pickup, in both left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations.

Inverted’s process begins with stripping the chassis down to bare metal, followed by a complete restoration to concours condition in preparation for the EV conversion. Owners have the freedom to select their preferred specifications for the exterior and interior.
The cabin features Bridge of Weir leather upholstery, a custom center console, and new floor mats. Modern amenities include an infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, a Hi-Fi audio system, a reversing camera, new A/C, and LED lights.
Inverted founder Harry Millington stated, “The people who are ordering these vehicles will have their own vision of what they want to do, whether they want to jack it up and put some big wheels on it or keep it close to original. The beauty of this is you can have a short wheelbase, long wheelbase, or one in between. Hard top, soft top, or a pickup truck. There’s loads of different versions of them and they’re all really cool.”
Pricing for the electrified Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 starts at £195,000 or $244,000 before taxes or optional features.
