Solaris, an European bus manufacturer, has secured significant orders for its hydrogen-powered buses, signaling a growing interest in zero-emission public transport solutions across Europe.
In Germany, the public transport operator Regionalverkehr Köln (RVK) has placed an order for 20 new fuel cell buses from Solaris, scheduled for delivery by the end of April 2025. This order includes a mix of nine Urbino 12 Hydrogen solo buses and eleven Urbino 18 Hydrogen articulated buses, marking a significant step towards sustainable mobility in Cologne.

The procurement is part of a larger initiative supported by the German government, aiming to deploy a total of 108 fuel cell buses by 2025, with a subsidy of 33.9 million euros.
Solaris has also secured an order to deliver 22 Urbino 12 Hydrogen buses to the greater Paris area in France by 2025. These buses will be part of a hydrogen pilot project led by Île-de-France Mobilités, which oversees public transport in the region.
The project, initiated in collaboration with the central procurement organization CATP, aims to evaluate the potential of hydrogen technology in the public transport system. This move aligns with Île-de-France Mobilités’ plan to introduce 3,500 “clean” buses, including electric, hybrid, or biogas-powered vehicles, between 2025 and 2028.

Solaris, which has already delivered hydrogen buses to several European countries, including Austria, Italy, and Spain, has emerged as a key player in the hydrogen bus market. The company’s recent annual report highlighted its market share of 44.5% of hydrogen buses registered in Europe in 2023.
Solaris has received orders for 535 hydrogen buses with delivery dates between 2024 and 2026, reflecting a strong demand for sustainable public transport solutions across the continent.
