Just unveiled last week, Rivian’s latest offering, the R2, is set to bring a blend of funky styling, attractive pricing, and fun features to the electric vehicle market. One of its standout features is a movie projector housed in the optional rooftop tent, known as the ‘Treehouse.’
In an interview with TechCrunch, Brian Gase, Senior Director of special projects and prototypes at Rivian, confirmed that the R2’s rooftop tent will indeed include a movie projector, powered by one of the vehicle’s power sources. The tent, stored in a black ‘hardshell’ that opens upwards, transforms into a compact rooftop tent. A roll-down screen for the projector is positioned near the tent window, complemented by convenient features like lighting and an interior fan.

Rivian plans to begin deliveries of the R2 in the first half of 2026, with a focus on keeping the cost of the tent affordable without compromising quality. Last year, a patent filed by Rivian revealed a mobile movie projector stored within the Gear Tunnel, hinting at the possibility of introducing this feature in larger models like the R1T and R1S.
Gase emphasized the importance of balancing cost and innovation, stating, “It’s about the cost because you can look at it and say ‘that’s awesome,’ but then you’re putting an expensive tent on a product that you’re trying to get to an introductory level price.”

With a base MSRP targeted at $45,000, the R2 aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y in terms of pricing. While the Model Y is a global success, Rivian is positioning the R2 as a more adventurous and capable off-roader, appealing to buyers seeking a rugged and versatile vehicle. Features like the Treehouse add to this allure.
Rivian also plans to offer additional accessories tailored for outdoor enthusiasts, including a travel kitchen and a cargo box designed to fit on the rear of the vehicle.

The R2’s affordable price tag has already garnered significant interest, with CEO RJ Scaringe announcing via X that Rivian has received nearly 70,000 reservations for the new SUV in less than 24 hours. “We are thrilled to see this vehicle resonate so strongly with our community!” wrote Scaringe.
For those seeking an even more budget-friendly option, Rivian has unveiled the smaller R3 and R3X. While these compact crossovers may not offer the same level of capability as their larger counterparts, they are expected to be priced lower, although final pricing details have not yet been confirmed.
