Tesla reported a remarkable 60.5% increase in sales in France during the month of September, compared to the same period last year. This surge in sales has solidified Tesla’s position in the French auto market, where the company now commands a 3.55% share. The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer’s impact on the market has also contributed to the growth of EVs on French roads, which reached 19% in September.

According to data from the Platform for Automotive (PFA), which represents manufacturers and suppliers in the sector, the overall registrations of new private cars in France saw a robust 10.7% increase compared to September 2022. Tesla’s impressive sales figures for the month amounted to 5,557 vehicles, and it’s worth noting that this achievement was primarily driven by the Model Y, as the company did not deliver Model 3 units in the country during that period.

One of the key factors enabling Tesla’s uninterrupted delivery of vehicles in France is the presence of Giga Berlin, a significant manufacturing facility. While a detailed breakdown of sales by model is awaited, early indications suggest that the Model Y played a substantial role in Tesla’s success in the French market during September.

Meanwhile, the Stellantis group, which encompasses well-known brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, DS, and Opel, experienced a 2.20% decline in new car registrations compared to the previous year. Despite this decline, Stellantis retains the largest market share at 28%. Renault, including the Renault, Dacia, and Alpine brands, holds the second position with a market share of 25.3% and managed to increase car registrations in France by 14.39% year on year.

A notable trend in the French auto market is the increasing presence of electric vehicles. In September, EVs accounted for a substantial 19% of total passenger vehicle sales. This represents a 3% increase compared to September 2022 and a notable 6% increase compared to the same month in 2021. Tesla has played a significant role in driving this growth in EV market share.

François Roudier, the communications director of the PFA, highlighted the significance of this surge in EV sales, describing the current figures as “the highest ever.” He emphasized that the EV market’s growth is being driven by three prominent models offered by Tesla, Dacia, and Peugeot. This shift toward electric vehicles underscores a transformative period in the French automotive landscape.
