Stellantis, a global automotive leader, has unveiled its inaugural Battery Technology Center at the Mirafiori complex in Turin, Italy. This groundbreaking €40 million investment is poised to bolster Stellantis’ prowess in designing, developing, and rigorously testing battery packs, modules, high-voltage cells, and software crucial for powering its forthcoming brand of electric vehicles.
This state-of-the-art center, touted as Italy’s largest and one of Europe’s most substantial facilities of its kind, will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of EV technology. With over 100 dedicated professionals stationed at the Mirafiori Battery Technology Center, the company aims to conduct vital tasks such as climatic stress tests, lifespan durability assessments, and the development and calibration of Battery Management System (BMS) software.
Notably, Stellantis is also poised to establish a Battery Technology Center in North America, specifically in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This strategic move is part of Stellantis’ overarching plan to construct a global network dedicated to battery development and manufacturing, which will include six gigafactories in total.
Spanning an impressive 8,000 square meters (86,111 square feet) across three levels, the Mirafiori Battery Technology Center boasts 32 climatic test chambers, comprising 24 walk-in chambers designed for battery pack testing and eight specialized chambers for cell-level testing.
Ned Curic, the Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Stellantis, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “We are in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to redefine mobility, providing smart and sustainable solutions for our customers. Our new Battery Technology Center at Mirafiori brings together the tools and talented people we need to design, test, verify, and produce class-leading products that will meet our customers’ needs and accelerate bringing class-leading electric vehicles to customers around the world.”
Stellantis envisions seamless integration of key milestones in the development of EV battery packs, ranging from design and development to rigorous testing and production, as a pivotal component of its strategy to manufacture cutting-edge Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).
