McLaren Unveils Advanced Inverter for Electric Drive Units in New EVs

McLaren Applied has recently introduced the IPG5-x, an innovative 800-volt silicon carbide inverter. The company’s latest creation is aimed at catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), providing them with a cutting-edge solution for seamless integration into electric drive units (EDUs) for upcoming electric vehicles.

Dubbed the IPG5-x, this forward-looking inverter has been meticulously designed in collaboration with Tier 1 suppliers and OEM partners. With versatility at its core, the IPG5-x is engineered to be compatible with a wide array of motors and transmissions. Notably, McLaren Applied is already in the midst of a collaboration with prominent transmission manufacturer Tremec. Together, they are embarking on the joint development of an EDU tailored for incorporation into their maiden vehicle application.

Paolo Bargiacchi, the Head of Product at McLaren Applied, shed light on the driving force behind the creation of the IPG5-x. He shared, “Through our dialogues with partners and clients, it has become evident that OEMs are increasingly seeking integrated EDUs that not only conserve space and reduce costs but also expedite the development timeline.” Bargiacchi went on to elaborate on the innovative aspects of the IPG5-x, highlighting its adaptability for seamless integration with various motor and transmission combinations. The inverter seamlessly inherits the notable qualities of McLaren’s standalone IPG5 model, such as peak efficiencies exceeding 99%, precision in motor control, and the ability for continuous variable switching. This marks a significant evolution from the previous iteration.

McLaren’s latest introduction, the IPG5-x inverter, is viewed as a pivotal advancement within what the company has termed the “waves of electrification.” These waves symbolize the progression of EV technology: the first wave characterizes the early trailblazers, followed by the second wave that propelled EVs into the mainstream, and finally, the third wave, which is marked by efficiency enhancements that promise a substantial increase in the driving range of EVs.

Bargiacchi emphasized the urgency to focus on enhancing drivetrain efficiency and driving down costs, a feat that the IPG5-x aims to achieve. He elaborated, “Products like the IPG5-x are pivotal in attaining heightened drivetrain efficiency and cost reduction. The competitive landscape has intensified significantly now that all manufacturers have established their product entry points.”

It’s worth noting that the McLaren Group divested its Applied technology division to Greybull Capital during the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. This strategic move allowed the company to channel resources towards its core businesses in the automotive and motorsport sectors, aligning with its evolving priorities.
