Dhp Technology, a pioneering Swiss startup, is set to revolutionize sustainable energy infrastructure with its groundbreaking folding solar roofs. These innovative structures, known as HORIZON, will be installed across 45 rest stops in the cantons of Valais and Bern, powering electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and ushering in a new era of clean and efficient transportation.
Dhp Technology is a key player in the dynamic ABCD-Horizon consortium, a collaborative effort that also includes Aventron, a Swiss energy company, BG Consulting Engineers, and Cargo Sous Terrain. The consortium’s visionary initiative is poised to transform the landscape of renewable energy utilization within the region.
The HORIZON solar roof boasts a patented folding mechanism that adapts seamlessly to changing weather conditions. Similar to the graceful movements of an accordion, this mechanized system automatically expands or retracts the solar panels based on prevailing climatic conditions. This flexibility is particularly advantageous in regions prone to heavy snowfall, allowing the solar roofs to efficiently shed snow accumulation.
One of the most remarkable features of the HORIZON solar roof is its lightweight and glass-free construction. This design innovation enables the structures to span significant distances between support points, without compromising parking spaces. With the ability to reach heights of up to 6 meters (19.6 feet), these roofs provide ample clearance for even large vehicles like semi-trucks, making them an ideal solution for motorway rest stops.
The 45 HORIZON folding solar roofs are projected to generate an impressive 35 megawatts (MW) of clean and renewable energy. This substantial output is equivalent to meeting the energy needs of approximately 7,800 households, each with an average annual electricity consumption of 4,500 kilowatt hours.
The energy harvested from these solar roofs will primarily serve the growing demand for EV charging infrastructure. Aventron, a prominent contributor to the consortium, outlines two key utilization strategies for the generated power. The electricity can either be channeled directly into existing charging stations at the rest stops or stored within batteries for later use. Any surplus energy will be seamlessly integrated into the grid and made available for purchase by Aventron’s principal shareholders and Cargo Sous Terrain.
Anticipated to commence next year, the construction of these innovative foldable PV systems marks a significant milestone in Switzerland’s sustainable energy journey. The project is expected to reach completion by 2027, laying the foundation for a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.
As the world grapples with the challenges posed by climate change, the HORIZON folding solar roofs represent a bold stride towards sustainable energy solutions. This ambitious venture not only underscores Switzerland’s commitment to renewable energy but also sets a precedent for global innovation at the intersection of clean power and transportation infrastructure.
