In the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles, Rivian has emerged as a prominent player with its limited portfolio comprising the R1T and R1S models. These offerings have garnered attention not just for their electric powertrains, but also for the intelligent features they bring to the table. Among these, the Camp Mode stands out as a unique addition, providing owners with enhanced utility for a variety of scenarios.
Rivian’s R1T electric truck has already showcased its versatility by offering ample cargo storage and a range of innovative features. The brand’s commitment to optimizing user experience has resulted in features like Roomy Entry & Exit, Kneel Mode, and Pet Comfort Mode, all designed to enhance the practicality of their vehicles.
Introduced through a software update, Camp Mode is a standout feature that adds to the vehicles’ adaptability. By accessing the feature through the center display’s ‘More’ menu and selecting the tent icon, users can activate Camp Mode. This mode utilizes a combination of air suspension and sensors to automatically level the vehicle on uneven terrain. This adjustment creates a flat surface within the vehicle, suitable for various activities like sleeping and cooking during camping trips.
Camp Mode goes beyond leveling the vehicle. It offers an array of functionalities aimed at maximizing convenience and energy usage when parked. Users can set timers for charging outlets and ports, dim interior displays, and utilize the vehicle’s floodlights from the side mirrors to illuminate the surroundings. The leveling process, which can take anywhere from 20 seconds to a few minutes, depends on the landscape’s complexity.
However, like other specialized modes in the Rivian R1 lineup, Camp Mode has its suitable and unsuitable contexts. While primarily designed for camping adventures, it can also be employed in scenarios requiring a flat surface, such as cooking or sleeping arrangements.
Camp Mode’s utility extends further with additional options. The ‘Stay on’ mode allows users to access comfort features like Wi-Fi, music, and climate controls. It can also be customized to turn off interior displays for a peaceful sleeping environment. On the other hand, the ‘Stay off’ setting deactivates power outlets, Gear Guard video, Center Display, and other functions, effectively converting the vehicle into a secure storage space. Notably, the built-in floodlights on the R1’s side mirrors offer flexible illumination options, operational even when the mirrors are folded.

It’s important to highlight that Camp Mode is designed for stationary use, and most of its features, including the floodlights, are only functional when the vehicle is parked. The leveling feature might not be accessible on steep slopes, and the vehicle prompts users to find a more suitable parking spot. Similarly, Camp Mode is disabled during charging or if the Gear Tunnel doors or tailgate are open. Rivian also advises users to level the vehicle before plugging in the charging cord, particularly when charging at a campground.
