Tesla’s manufacturing stronghold in China, Giga Shanghai, continues to exhibit a robust production trajectory, reaffirming its significance since its establishment in 2019. The latest production statistics, sourced from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), reveal that Giga Shanghai’s output remains stable, with a manufacturing total of 80,345 cars in the past month. While this figure registers a slight decrease from the previous month’s 80,365 units, the factory has consistently maintained a pattern of producing around 80,000 vehicles or more for four consecutive months.
A closer look at the breakdown of production by model indicates that Giga Shanghai is currently witnessing notable success with the manufacturing of Model Ys. In the recent month, the facility produced an impressive 57,604 units of the Model Y, marking the second-highest output for this model since its inception. This record was only eclipsed by the figures achieved in March 2023, when the factory rolled out 60,127 units of the popular electric SUV. The remaining balance of the production pie was attributed to the Model 3, accounting for 22,741 units, which represents a modest 11% deviation from the year-to-date average. These figures were procured from the meticulous sales data reported by member automakers of the China Passenger Car Association.
BREAKING: According to CPCA data, Tesla produced 80,345 vehicles at Giga Shanghai in July.

On the sales front, Tesla’s performance in China during the same period reflects a slightly nuanced perspective. The company managed to retail a total of 31,423 electric vehicles (EVs), comprising 23,632 Model Ys and 7,791 Model 3s. Interestingly, Tesla’s retail sales tally stood at 64,285 units, indicating a preference towards the higher-end models. Consequently, this left the EV giant with an inventory of 16,060 units, encompassing 13,643 Model Ys and 2,417 Model 3s by the conclusion of July.
It’s worth noting that earlier reports had suggested a 31% decline in Tesla’s China sales in July as compared to the preceding month. However, the freshly released data from the China Passenger Car Association provides a more comprehensive context, shedding light on the automaker’s prevailing situation. Speculation surrounding Giga Shanghai’s initiation of “Project Highland Model 3” production has emerged, possibly offering an avenue to bolster the sales trajectory of the Model 3 in the forthcoming months.
