RecycLiCo Battery Materials and Nanoramic Laboratories have entered into a strategic collaboration with the common objective of enhancing the complete life cycle of lithium-ion batteries.
In this collaborative effort, Nanoramic Laboratories will provide its Neocarbonix lithium-ion battery cathode electrodes, known for their high-performance characteristics and cost-effective nanocarbon mesh binding structure. The key objective of this partnership is to subject these advanced electrodes to testing using RecycLiCo’s in-house lithium-ion battery recycling process, recognized for its impressive ability to extract up to 99% of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt from conventional cathode waste materials.
The overarching aim of this strategic alliance is to establish a framework for the integration of Nanoramic and RecycLiCo technologies into future commercial operations. Additionally, the collaboration addresses potential challenges related to the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in lithium-ion batteries by leveraging Nanoramic’s NMP-free and PVDF-free electrode solutions.
Drawing from RecycLiCo’s expertise in repurposing waste cathodes into valuable battery-grade materials, both entities are committed to closing the loop of the battery life cycle by ensuring the recycled materials are returned to Nanoramic Laboratories for subsequent cell production and advanced electrochemical analysis.
Nanoramic Laboratories, which emerged from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2009, operates on a licensing business model and possesses a track record of over 14 years of research. This effort has resulted in the issuance and pending status of over 200 patents, showcasing the laboratory’s dedication to technological innovation.
At the heart of this collaboration lies Nanoramic’s Neocarbonix technology, which offers cathode electrodes with a sophisticated 3-D nanoscopic carbon binding structure. This design not only contributes to cost reduction but also enhances power, energy density, and cycle life performance in comparison to traditional battery designs.
With an eye on sustainable and technologically advanced solutions, the partnership between RecycLiCo and Nanoramic Laboratories could potentially reshape the landscape of lithium-ion batteries – from their manufacturing to recycling processes. By combining advanced electrode technology with recycling proficiency, this collaboration has the potential to usher in a new phase of efficiency and environmental consciousness in battery technology.
