Changan Automobile’s new energy vehicle (NEV) brand, Deepal, recently introduced its latest SUV, the Deepal S7, which is set to rival Tesla’s Model Y. With a primary target audience in the Model 3 market, Deepal unveiled the S7 during a highly anticipated launch event yesterday evening. Surpassing expectations, the starting price for the Deepal S7 stands at RMB 149,900 ($20,878), marking a significant reduction of RMB 20,000 from the pre-sale price announced back on May 20. Notably, this price point is considerably lower than the Model Y, which starts at RMB 263,900.
The Deepal S7 comes in two distinct powertrain versions, providing options for consumers. The first is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) version, while the second is an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version, similar to Li Auto vehicles. Deliveries for the new SUV are scheduled to commence on June 30.
Within the EREV version of the Deepal S7, there are three available versions with varying price points: RMB 149,900, RMB 159,900, and RMB 169,900. Meanwhile, the BEV variant of the Deepal S7 offers two options, priced at RMB 189,900 and RMB 202,900 respectively. During the pre-sale period, the model’s price range spanned from RMB 169,900 to RMB 239,900.

In comparison, Tesla’s Model Y is currently available in China in three versions: an entry-level rear-wheel drive model, a dual-motor all-wheel drive long-range version, and a dual-motor all-wheel drive performance version. These variants start at RMB 263,900, RMB 313,900, and RMB 363,900 respectively.
The Deepal S7, a mid-size SUV, boasts dimensions similar to those of the Model Y. It measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,625 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. Comparatively, the Model Y spans 4,750 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, 1,624 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.
Both BEV versions of the Deepal S7 are rear-wheel drive and equipped with a single electric motor. The maximum power output for these versions is 160 kW and 190 kW, respectively, with a maximum torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h can be achieved in 6.7 seconds and 7.5 seconds, respectively. The power battery capacity of these BEV versions ranges from 66.8 kWh to 79.97 kWh, providing a CLTC range of 520 km and 620 km respectively.
As for the Deepal S7 EREV, all three versions are powered by a 1.5 L engine, boasting a maximum power output of 70 kW. Additionally, they are equipped with an electric motor that delivers a peak power of 175 kW and a peak torque of 320 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h for all three EREV versions is approximately 7.6 seconds. The battery pack capacity ranges from 18.99 kWh to 31.73 kWh, offering a battery range of 121 km to 200 km. When fully fueled and charged, the three EREV versions of the Deepal S7 achieve a CLTC range of 1,040 km to 1,120 km.
Deepal, Changan’s NEV brand, made its debut announcement in 2022. Last year, on July 25, Deepal officially released its sedan model, the Deepal SL03, directly competing with Tesla’s Model 3. Unlike the Model 3, the Deepal SL03 is available in three different power versions: a BEV variant, an EREV variant, and a version featuring a hydrogen fuel cell.
