Volvo Cars has unveiled its latest offering in the electric vehicle (EV) market, the EX30 fully-electric small SUV. The launch of the EX30, which took place in Milan, marks Volvo’s entry into the affordable EV segment as it competes with industry leader Tesla.
With a starting price of approximately €36,000 ($38,500), Volvo aims to make the EX30 an attractive option for customers seeking an EV that is more affordable than Tesla’s Model 3, which starts at over €40,000. Tesla has recently reduced its prices in an effort to stimulate demand amidst intensifying competition within the EV market.
Volvo Cars’ CEO, Jim Rowan, has expressed confidence in the healthy demand for EVs and stated that the company did not feel compelled to follow Tesla’s lead in reducing prices. With ambitious goals of making EVs account for half of its sales volumes by the middle of the decade and transitioning to selling only EVs by 2030, Volvo sees the EX30 as a significant business opportunity in the coming years.
The EX30, Volvo’s smallest SUV to date, is now available for ordering in select markets, primarily in Europe. It offers customers a choice between two battery types. The first option is the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, which is less expensive and requires fewer resources. This battery is ideal for customers who primarily drive within cities or cover shorter distances. The second option is the NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery, which provides an extended range of up to 480 kilometers (198 miles) for EX30 buyers. Volvo has not disclosed the pricing for the NMC versions or the range for the LFP ones.
Volvo claims that initial data from two markets indicate that the total cost of ownership for the EX30 is lower than that of any other fully-electric car in its lineup and most competitors in the electric small SUV segment. Currently, electric SUVs from European premium brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Audi start at a minimum of €56,000. In comparison, the starting price of the EX30 is on par with the electric version of Jeep’s Avenger small SUV.
By offering a premium fully-electric SUV at a competitive price, Volvo Cars aims to attract customers who are seeking environmentally friendly transportation without compromising on quality or affordability. With the EX30, Volvo takes a step forward in its commitment to sustainable mobility and positions itself as a formidable contender in the expanding EV market.
