Volkswagen has finally revealed the North American iteration of its highly anticipated ID. Buzz electric microbus. This new version boasts an additional row of seats and is set to commence deliveries in the coming year, sparking enthusiasm among eager consumers.

The North American ID. Buzz closely resembles its European counterpart, but with several noteworthy enhancements. With an impressive 282 horsepower (compared to the previous 201 horsepower), the vehicle offers a top speed of 99 mph, exceeding the previous 90 mph limit. Moreover, the battery capacity has been upgraded from 82kWh to 91kWh, while the overall length has increased by a significant 10 inches.

The extended length is attributed to the 10-inch-longer wheelbase unique to the North American specification. Measuring 192.4 inches long, the three-row ID. Buzz surpasses Volkswagen’s original microbus, which was only 168 inches long. This expansion translates into additional space for both passengers and cargo, although the extra row of seats does consume some of the newfound room. However, the second row can be folded flat, and the third row is removable, mitigating any potential space constraints.

Additionally, the extended size accommodates an extra 9kWh of battery capacity. While the official range for the three-row version has not yet been announced, the European specification boasts an impressive 263 miles on the WLTP cycle. It is important to note that despite the larger battery, the increased dimensions and weight of the North American version may result in lower EPA mileage estimates compared to WLTP estimates. Consequently, the final range figure remains uncertain.

Regarding charging capabilities, Volkswagen has yet to disclose any alterations for the ID. Buzz. The European specification currently offers 170kW charging, and it is likely that the US version will retain this feature. However, the larger battery could potentially enable slightly faster charging speeds, which would be a welcomed improvement.

In terms of efficiency, Volkswagen’s press release indicates that the Buzz achieves a drag coefficient of 0.29, a commendable figure considering its unique shape.

Distinct from its European counterpart, the North American model introduces three new colors: Cabana Blue, Metro Silver, and Indium Grey, offering customers a wider array of aesthetic choices.

Although the price for the US version of the ID. Buzz has not been officially confirmed by Volkswagen, it currently starts in the $65K-$70K range in Europe after taxes. Given the larger size of the North American variant, it is reasonable to expect a higher price point. However, the initial quoted price is likely to be slightly lower since US taxes are added separately. Consequently, the vehicle is expected to fall within the upper end of the electric SUV market rather than the entry-level segment.

Comparatively, the ID. Buzz stands out from other vehicles on the market, occupying a unique space between vans and minivans while exuding distinctive character. Although there is one plug-in hybrid minivan available, namely the Pacifica Hybrid, and a few electric commercial vans like the eSprinter and E-Transit, the ID. Buzz has no direct competitors. Nevertheless, minivans are the closest match, but they typically have significantly lower starting prices, around $35,000. Despite this, the Buzz offers various incentives and reduced operational costs in terms of energy consumption and maintenance.

As the first all-electric entrant in this particular segment, Volkswagen believes it can justify the higher price point. Evidently, there is considerable demand for an appealing electric vehicle that embodies the essence of a minivan while offering potential for unique conversions and adventurous experiences.

While no further information about the upcoming California camper van was provided, the extended wheelbase of the ID. Buzz presents exciting possibilities for Volkswagen. With ample space and built-in electrical capabilities, the vehicle opens up a world of exciting options for van-lifers, including off-grid adventures powered by solar panels.

Enthusiasts and the general public will have their first opportunity to experience the three-row ID. Buzz firsthand today. Volkswagen will host an unveiling event at Huntington Beach, California, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at the beach parking lot located at 21101 E. Pacific Coast Hwy, allowing attendees to catch a glimpse of this remarkable vehicle.
