A photo of an unconfirmed Tesla Model 3 prototype has surfaced on social media, sparking rumors that it could be a part of the rumored Model 3 refresh project, codenamed “Highland.” Late last year, reports emerged that Tesla was planning to launch a Model 3 refresh in the second half of 2023, and this new photo has fueled speculation that it could be a glimpse of what’s to come.

Tesla has been working on integrating large casting technology into its vehicles, starting with the Model Y. This technology allows for the use of single, large casting parts to replace several smaller parts in the vehicle’s assembly, which improves manufacturing efficiency. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that this technology would be implemented in the Model 3, but there has been no confirmed timeline for this.

The implementation of this technology in the Model 3 would cause a temporary slowdown in production, which Tesla couldn’t afford while it was still ramping up Model Y production. However, with Model Y production now surpassing that of the Model 3, it may be an opportune time for Tesla to introduce this technology into the Model 3.

In December, a heavily camouflaged Model 3 prototype was spotted being tested in California, and another one was seen shortly after. While it was difficult to discern any specific changes to the Model 3 from these prototypes, a new photo has emerged on the Tesla subreddit, allegedly showing the front end of the new Model 3 refresh.

It’s worth noting that the origin and authenticity of this photo have not been confirmed, and there’s no way to verify if it is indeed a prototype for the Model 3 refresh or just a vehicle with a body kit attempting to pass as one. However, if this photo is genuine, it could provide a glimpse into the changes that the Model 3 refresh could bring to the vehicle. As of now, Tesla has not made any official announcements regarding the Model 3 refresh project, and we’ll have to wait for more information to emerge before drawing any conclusions.
