Alfa Romeo to Launch Electric Brennero SUV and Shift Towards All-Electric Models by 2027

Alfa Romeo is set to join the electric vehicle (EV) market with its upcoming Brennero model, reportedly launching next year. The Brennero will be a small SUV based on the Jeep Avenger, and is expected to offer several types of drive, including an electric option. It will use an in-house 115 kW electric motor developed by the Stellantis-Niedc joint venture and the current generation of the e-CMP electric drive. The vehicle will also boast an improved battery capacity of 54 kWh, which should provide a range on par with the Avenger, which can travel up to 392 kilometres according to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

The Brennero’s electric option will likely be part of a multi-energy platform and may also come with internal combustion engines or mild hybrids. There is no word yet on whether the hybrid petrol engine option will be available in Europe or solely overseas. Alfa Romeo’s larger SUV, the Stelvio, is expected to have a purely electric successor, with reports suggesting it will be based on the STLA Large, an all-electric platform from Stellantis. Alfa Romeo is reportedly planning to become an all-electric brand by 2027.

The Brennero and Stelvio will not be the only EV models to join Alfa Romeo’s fleet. The Giulia saloon model is also set to have an all-electric successor based on the STLA Large. The two models will have different designs despite sharing the same platform, with the upcoming Stelvio taking cues from the current combustion model and focusing on comfort, practicality and user-friendliness. The flatter E-limousine will be optimised for range. While technical specifications are not yet available, the STLA Large could potentially accommodate battery sizes of up to 100 kWh.

With these developments, Alfa Romeo is joining a growing list of automakers making the shift towards electric vehicles. The company’s plans to become an all-electric brand within the next few years is a clear indication of where the industry is headed. As more automakers focus on electrification, it will be interesting to see how the market evolves and which models emerge as the most popular among consumers. The Brennero and its upcoming electric counterparts from Alfa Romeo could be poised to play a significant role in this transition.
