Kia Reveals EV9 In First Official Images, a Three-Row Electric SUV with Upscale Design

Kia has entered the burgeoning electric crossover market with its latest offering, the all-new EV9. While most electric crossovers come with two rows of seats, the EV9 boasts a rare third-row option, making it one of the few EVs to offer this feature.

The EV9 was previewed as a concept in 2021 and the production model stays true to the original design. Kia’s Opposites United design philosophy is evident in the vehicle’s upscale look, which draws inspiration from the electric Telluride. The crossover sports a bold, modern aesthetic with a “digital tiger face” front end that features vertical headlights and a wide lower intake, complemented by a sculpted hood and a faux skid plate.

The vehicle’s profile is an attractive blend of sharp lines and soft curves, with edgy fenders and wheel arches that immediately catch the eye. The designers have paid attention to the details, including flush-mounted door handles, blacked-out pillars, and a ‘floating’ roof. The EV9 rides on aerodynamic four-spoke wheels, and a dynamic beltline kicks up past the C-pillar, featuring expanding chrome trim.

The EV9’s rear continues the eye-catching design, with flowing taillights and a sizable spoiler. Gloss black cladding contrasts with a silver bumper designed to recall a skid plate.

While the third-row is the highlight of the vehicle, Kia has been stingy with sharing details. However, the automaker has announced that the crossover will be offered in six and seven-seat configurations, with “generous space for all occupants to connect and relax” in “lounge-style comfort.” The second-row seats can swivel 180 degrees, allowing passengers to interact with those sitting in the third-row. Third-row passengers will find cup holders and charging ports to help them stay connected and comfortable.

The EV9’s interior features a “floating panoramic dashboard” that houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, and a 5-inch display for climate controls. Grey trim with an array of “digital buttons” for the infotainment system and minimalist climate controls create a clean, modern look. A BMW-esque volume roller and column-mounted shifter add to the premium feel. Other highlights include ambient lighting, a distinctive center console, and an airy two-tone design.

Kia has not yet released specifications for the EV9, but the model rides on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), and the digital instrument cluster suggests a range of over 298 miles (480 km). Production is set to begin this fall, and while prices have not been officially announced, a leaked customer survey indicates that the base model could start at around $56,000, with the flagship trim exceeding $70,000. The EV9 will not be limited to America, as Kia plans to sell it in Europe, with U.K. sales starting later this year.

In a market increasingly dominated by electric crossovers, the EV9 stands out with its third-row option and distinctive design. With Kia’s commitment to innovation and style, the EV9 is poised to make a strong impact in the competitive EV market.
