Mitsubishi’s Electrification Plan: Nine Electric and Hybrid Models Set to Launch by 2028

Mitsubishi Motors, the Japanese automaker, has revealed its strategic plan to launch 16 new models in the next five years, with a particular focus on electric and hybrid vehicles. The ambitious plan will see the company introduce nine electric and hybrid models, along with a pickup truck and an SUV, as part of its alliance with Renault and Nissan.

Although details of the alliance models are yet to be released, the rendering suggests they will be battery-electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the other nine models already include the Mitsubishi ASX, a compact EV Colt, and two models that are yet to be revealed.

To ensure the supply of battery cells for these models, Mitsubishi plans to invest 210 billion yen (approximately 1.45 billion euros) by 2030 to procure batteries with a capacity of 15 GWh. However, the Japanese company has not yet confirmed which cell suppliers it intends to collaborate with.

Mitsubishi is planning to primarily generate its sales with electric and hybrid vehicles from 2030, and mainly with battery-electric vehicles from 2035. The company is also reportedly considering a stake in Renault’s electric car division Ampere, although no new statements have been made about this as part of the strategic plan.

In addition to the vehicle launch plan, the manufacturer aims to achieve a sales volume of 1.1 million vehicles with an operating margin of seven percent over the next three years. However, there is no mention of the specific percentage of “xEVs,” which include hybrid cars, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric cars, and (in Mitsubishi’s case theoretically) fuel cell cars, in this plan.

As the automotive industry moves towards a more sustainable future, Mitsubishi’s strategic plan to focus on electric and hybrid vehicles is a positive step. With the investment in battery cells and collaborations with other manufacturers, Mitsubishi is demonstrating its commitment to reducing emissions and providing customers with sustainable transportation options.
