According to CEO Elon Musk, limited production of the Tesla Cybertruck will begin this summer. This was announced during the company’s Q4 2022 Earnings Call on Wednesday evening.
During the call, Musk and Tesla’s management team were asked about the production schedule for the all-electric Cybertruck, and Musk confirmed that it is on track to begin later this year. Musk responded:
“We do expect production to start sometime this summer, but I always kind of downplay the start of production because the start of production is always very slow.”
Production of the Cybertruck is set to begin later this year. However, Elon Musk has emphasized that the start of production for a vehicle is not significant, as it takes time for a company to refine its manufacturing processes and increase volume.
What matters is volume production, which is set to begin in 2024, a delay from previous expectations of late 2023. Equipment for the Cybertruck, such as the castings and assembly body shops, is currently being installed at Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas, but the ramp up to full production will occur in 2024. The IDRA 9,000-ton Giga Press, which will be used for the body of the Cybertruck, was seen being assembled in a January drone flyover. This press is also used by Tesla for the Model Y’s front and rear underbody castings.
It appears that the Cybertruck is nearing production, as molds for the vehicle were delivered to Gigafactory Texas on Sunday. A bill of lading indicates that the molds arrived in the U.S. on January 16 and were delivered to the facility two days later. However, according to estimates made by Elon Musk during the Q4 Earnings Call, limited production will not begin until this summer.
