In an effort to reduce carbon emissions to zero, Amazon.com Inc will invest more than 1 billion euros over the next 5 years in electric vehicles in Europe.
In addition to reducing carbon emissions, in this investment Amazon wants to spur innovation across Europe’s transportation industry and push for more public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
Amazon says this investment will help more than triple its fleet of electric vans in Europe, which currently has 3,000 vehicles and will be more than 10,000 by 2025 with a mission to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040.
Further, Amazon added it also hopes to purchase more than 1,500 electric heavy goods vehicles that will be used for “medium mile” deliveries to package centers in the coming years.
However, these zero-emission electric vans and trucks are still not widely available for purchase, although a number of major logistics companies such as United Parcel Service Inc and FedEx Corp are committed to purchasing a large number of zero-emission electric vans and trucks.
Meanwhile, Amazon’s largest electric van order is 100,000 vehicles from Rivian Automotive Inc through 2025, and in addition to EVs, Amazon will also invest in thousands of chargers in facilities across Europe.
In addition, Amazon also said it will invest in doubling its network of “micro-mobility” hubs in Europe in 20 cities recently, such as implementing new delivery methods including electric cargo bikes or walking delivery to reduce emissions.
