Toyota Motor Corporation recently launched the latest generation of the Crown flagship model. This product is reborn after decades of being known as a full size sedan model, now available in four models, namely crossover, sedan, sport and estate (station wagon).
When Toyota launched the 2023 Crown a few months ago, all of these variants were only equipped with a hybrid powertrain. However, currently Toyota is reportedly working on a Plug-in Hybrid version for the Crown sedan model.
The news was conveyed by Toyota President and CEO Akio Toyoda during a car dealer meeting in Las Vegas.
“We don’t have big details about the plug-in hybrid, but there is a high possibility that it will get the same Plug-in Hybrid powertrain as the RAV4 Prime,” quoted from Thetorquereport, Tuesday (4/10/2022).
“We’ll have to wait and see if Crown Prime gets the more powerful powertrain that Toyota currently offers.”
For information, the entire new Crown family is built on the global Toyota TNGA platform. There are two engine options, a 2,400 cc turbo hybrid that produces 340 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.
Then there is the usual 2,500 cc hybrid option for the lowest variant that produces around 236 hp.
If Crown Prime gets the same powertrain as the RAV4 Prime, it will use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with a high-capacity lithium-ion battery, boost converter and 2 electric motors capable of producing 302 hp.
As for the mileage, it can be traversed up to 63 km with only electric power. However, there is no further information regarding the specifications of the Toyota Crown PHEV.
