In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the existence of the Renault 5, the manufacturer plans to present the Renault 5 Turbo 3E at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. The interesting thing that will be pinned on this Renault 5 Turbo 3E is that the exterior design uses the Turbo 2 form and has a special feature of drifting with a source pure electric power. However, the model that will appear is a prototype form and has not been scheduled whether it will be produced in the near future.
“The concept presented in the Renault 5 Turbo 3E prototype is that an electric car can still be driven in any style, including for fun or drifting. We aim to pay homage to the Renault 5 which has made many contributions to the manufacturer, especially in the world of motorsport,” said Gilles Vidal, Vice President Design of Renault Brand.
The electric motor embedded in the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is claimed to be able to produce a maximum power of up to 370 hp without pause. In addition, the manufacturer also pinned three drifting modes which are intended to make it easier for drivers to drift, spin or accelerate quickly. Although these three features have never been available in the Renault 5 lineup, which existed in the 1980s.
Uniquely, when one of these driving modes is activated automatically the LED lights on the front of the car will light up with a choice of yellow, pink and blue colors. Even Renault also accommodates the needs of drivers who want to capture their moments of drifting together with the Turbo 2 by providing 10 brackets for action cameras such as Gopro inside and outside the car.
In addition, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E which is made for drifting needs is specifically designed with several special materials. One of them is the air intake at the front which can increase downforce and be a natural cooler for the battery. In addition, there is also a large spoiler that also increases the level of vehicle aerodynamics even more.
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E will be equipped with a lithium ion battery with a capacity of 42 kWh that drives dual motors throughout the wheels. Although there are no official figures, a number of sources say that the Turbo 3E is capable of accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with a maximum speed of 200 km/h. In addition, the fully charged battery is also able to bring the Renault 5 Turbo 3E to roam as far as 321 km.
“The Turbo 3E combines ultra-technical design and purposeful excitement with many references to the worlds of auto racing and video games. In addition, this Renault 5 Turbo 3E shows that electric cars can also be fun with extraordinary performance,” added Vidal.
Meanwhile, there are accents from the Turbo 2 which are also embedded in this Turbo 3E prototype, including air ducts on the side and rear fenders with an iconic design. And the design of the bonnet, doors and cockpit which also looks very similar to the Turbo 2. Before being brought to the Paris Motor Show 2022, the prototype along with other Renault 5 families was present at the Chantily Arts and Elegance Contest in France.
