The city of Shenzhen on Monday (1/8) officially began allowing fully autonomous vehicles on certain sections. The operation of autonomous vehicles is possible after local regulations regarding smart and internet-connected vehicles come into effect.
With the regulation, fully autonomous vehicles without drivers can run on roads in designated areas.
The regulations also regulate liability in traffic accidents involving autonomous vehicles with or without a driver.
DeepRoute.ai, a Shenzhen-based self-driving vehicle startup, is conducting a road trial of its autonomous vehicle in downtown Shenzhen. An autonomous vehicle made by DeepRoute.ai managed to complete the 9.6 km journey in about half an hour.
DeepRoute.ai Executive Director Maxwell Zhou said that the regulation will help companies developing autonomous vehicles improve their technology level and accelerate the commercialization of autonomous vehicles.
DeepRoute.ai has further optimized its algorithm and reimplemented the security strategy for road trials, Zhou said.
