Volvo Trucks has started series production of its new FH Aero Electric, with the first electric long-haul trucks now rolling off the production line at the company’s Tuve plant near Gothenburg, Sweden. The model offers a claimed range of up to 700 kilometres on a single charge.
The FH Aero Electric was introduced in June and became available for order shortly afterwards, together with Volvo Trucks’ new e-axle. The start of series production marks the next stage in the rollout of the long-range electric truck as Volvo expands its battery-electric heavy-duty portfolio.
Volvo Expands Electric Long-Haul Options
Volvo Trucks said the new FH Aero Electric, together with the next-generation FH Electric, FM Electric and FMX Electric, allows transport operators to perform a broader range of tasks using fully electric trucks.
The company said customer interest in the new FH Aero Electric has been strong, particularly because of its longer driving range and flexibility across different applications.
“We are now turning groundbreaking technology into industrial reality. Starting series production of our new electric trucks is a clear proof of our commitment to lead the transformation to more sustainable truck transport,” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
“The response from customers is very positive and we see a high interest in ordering the new trucks. With longer ranges, maximum flexibility across different applications and excellent drivability, it’s easier than ever to go electric,” Alm said.
725 KWh Of Usable Battery Capacity
A key feature of the FH Aero Electric is its large battery pack configuration. The truck has eight battery packs with a combined installed capacity of 780 kWh.
Volvo Trucks states that 725 kWh of this capacity is usable, providing the energy required for the claimed 700-kilometre range.
The battery capacity gives the FH Aero Electric an advantage over some competing long-range electric trucks in terms of usable energy. At IAA Transportation, MAN is presenting its latest eTGX with a claimed maximum range of up to 720 kilometres.
The MAN eTGX achieves that figure with 644 kWh of gross and 616 kWh of net battery capacity, while MAN says more than 600 kilometres is realistically achievable under typical long-haul operating conditions.
Volvo Unveils Electric Truck For 80-Tonne Operations
Volvo Trucks is also using IAA Transportation to showcase an electric heavy-haul truck designed for gross combination weights of up to 80 tonnes.
The vehicle is intended for heavy-haul applications that can require special permits in markets such as Germany. Volvo does not initially plan to introduce the model in Germany, instead targeting Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
At a gross combination weight of 64 tonnes, the truck can achieve up to 450 kilometres per battery charge in the specified markets. At gross combination weights of 74 or 76 tonnes, which are permitted in Sweden and Finland, Volvo states that ranges of up to 420 kilometres are possible.
“High total weights in truck transport lower both transport costs and environmental impact. If we also electrify these transports, we take an important step towards more sustainable transport,” said Jan Hjelmgren, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks.
Heavy-Haul Electric Truck Enters Market From 2027
The 80-tonne configuration consists of an electric truck with a fixed body and a trailer. Volvo Trucks plans to begin the market introduction of the FH Electric with a fixed body gradually from early 2027.
The fixed-body model will be available with all Volvo FH cab variants except the XXL cab. Customers will be able to choose between standard and Aero cab configurations.
The introduction expands Volvo Trucks’ electric range beyond conventional long-haul applications and into heavier transport operations, where higher gross combination weights can increase payload efficiency while reducing the environmental impact of individual transport movements.
