APM Terminals Los Angeles has ordered 40 additional battery-electric terminal tractors from Orange EV for deployment at its Pier 400 facility, expanding the terminal’s electric fleet and advancing its equipment electrification program.
The new vehicles will increase the number of electric terminal tractors operating at Pier 400 from 20 to 60 units, making the facility one of the largest adopters of battery-electric terminal tractors at the Port of Los Angeles.
According to the companies, the deployment will complete the electrification of the terminal’s on-dock rail drayage fleet.
Building on Existing Fleet Performance
The expansion follows the introduction of 20 Orange EV terminal tractors that began operating at Pier 400 in April 2025.
APM Terminals said the fleet has accumulated approximately 42,000 operating hours while maintaining an average uptime of 98.8%.
The company estimates the electric tractors have displaced more than 40,000 gallons of diesel-equivalent fuel consumption and reduced associated emissions compared with conventional diesel-powered equipment.
Fleet Electrification Progress
Once all 60 electric tractors enter service, expected by January 2027, battery-electric vehicles will account for roughly 60% of Pier 400’s 101-unit terminal tractor fleet.
The company is also pursuing additional funding opportunities that could support the acquisition of further electric equipment in the future.
The broader electrification strategy forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions from cargo-handling operations at the terminal.
Charging Infrastructure Expansion
Pier 400 currently operates 51 charging points to support electric equipment.
To accommodate the expanded tractor fleet, APM Terminals plans to procure 20 additional dual-plug Level 3 fast-charging stations through a separate procurement process.
The terminal said its existing charging infrastructure is sufficient to support the initial deployment of the newly ordered vehicles.
Workforce Training Initiatives
In preparation for the expanded electric fleet, additional technical training will be provided to maintenance personnel.
Lead mechanics are expected to complete advanced electrical safety training, building on programs already delivered to terminal maintenance staff.
Orange EV has also supplied a HUSK-e XP vehicle to an International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) training center for hands-on instruction.
HUSK-e XP Specifications
The newly ordered tractors are Orange EV’s HUSK-e XP model, designed for heavy-duty port and terminal operations.
Each vehicle is equipped with a 310-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and is capable of moving combined loads of up to 180,000 pounds.
The tractors are manufactured in Kansas and comply with domestic sourcing requirements under federal infrastructure programs.
EPA Clean Ports Program Support
The procurement is part of a broader modernization initiative supported by funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program.
APM Terminals is participating through an $80 million project administered by the Port of Los Angeles, which includes the replacement of various types of cargo-handling equipment with lower-emission alternatives.
The project combines federal grant funding, contributions from the Port of Los Angeles, and capital investments from APM Terminals.
As part of its long-term strategy, the terminal has also committed additional private funding toward the electrification of operations at Pier 400.
