Tesla’s Model Y became Australia’s best-selling vehicle in May, marking a significant milestone for electric vehicles in a market traditionally dominated by pickup trucks and internal combustion engine models.
The achievement came as Tesla delivered 6,433 vehicles in Australia during the month, its second-highest monthly sales total on record. The Model Y accounted for 5,605 units, while the Model 3 contributed 828 deliveries, according to industry sales data.
The result placed the Model Y ahead of Australia’s long-time sales leaders, including the Ford Ranger, which recorded 4,474 deliveries, and the Toyota HiLux, which sold 4,005 units during the month.
Model Y Leads Overall Vehicle Market
The May figures made the Model Y not only the country’s best-selling electric vehicle but also the top-selling vehicle overall, regardless of powertrain type.
The performance also helped Tesla return to Australia’s top 10 automotive brands by monthly sales volume, ranking sixth overall. The automaker’s sales increased more than 65% compared with the same month a year earlier.
The result highlights the growing competitiveness of electric vehicles in Australia’s mainstream automotive market, where EVs have steadily gained market share over recent years.
EV Market Share Reaches New High
The Model Y’s strong showing coincided with a record month for electric vehicle adoption across Australia.
Battery-electric vehicles accounted for nearly one-fifth of all new vehicle sales during May, while electrified vehicles—including hybrids and plug-in hybrids—represented close to half of the overall market.
The growing share of electrified vehicles reflects broader changes in consumer purchasing patterns as buyers increasingly consider alternatives to conventional gasoline and diesel-powered models.
Industry observers have pointed to fuel price volatility and improving EV availability as factors contributing to increased demand for electric vehicles.
Expanded Lineup Supports Growth
Tesla’s recent momentum has also been supported by the introduction of the six-seat Model YL, which broadens the appeal of the Model Y lineup by targeting larger families and customers seeking additional passenger capacity.
The expanded offering arrives as Tesla seeks to strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing electric vehicle markets.
“This is not an isolated result. It reflects our sustained commitment to delivering world-class electric vehicles and an ownership experience that continues to raise the bar for the industry,” said Thom Drew, Tesla Australia and New Zealand Country Director.
Milestone for Australia’s EV Market
Beyond Tesla’s sales performance, the Model Y’s rise to the top of the national sales rankings represents a notable development for Australia’s automotive sector.
While electric vehicles have steadily increased their presence in the market, May 2026 marked the first time an EV finished as the country’s best-selling vehicle, surpassing every gasoline, diesel and hybrid competitor.
