Up Close with Toyota bZ4X : Specifications, Range and price

Toyota officially launched the All New Toyota bZ4X electric car in Japan today, Thursday, May 12, 2022. This car was built using a special BEV platform developed by Toyota with Subaru called e-TNGA.

Launching the official TMC website, the e-TNGA platform is able to provide an attractive, smooth, intuitive driving experience, not only for BEVs, but also for any car, including off-road cars.

In addition, this platform also provides ample cabin space, including ample legroom for the front and rear seats. In addition, this car features a low instrument panel with a cloth lining on the dashboard and a large panoramic moonroof.

The e-TNGA platform also has a low center of gravity thanks to the use of a thin, high-capacity battery that sits flat under the cab floor. Then eAxle integrates electric motors, transaxles and inverters, as well as a power supply unit (ESU) combining charging and power distribution functions.

The All New Toyota bZ4X is equipped with a Lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 71.4 kWh for both types, namely FWD and 4WD. For front-wheel drive (FWD) it can cover a maximum distance of 559 kilometers, while for 4WD it can cover a maximum distance of 540 kilometers on a single charge.

In the FWD type, an AC 1XM synchronous electric motor is attached which is capable of producing a maximum power of 150 kW or the equivalent of 201 HP and 266 Nm of torque. Then for the 4WD type, it uses an AC 1YM electric motor with a power generated of 80 kW or the equivalent of 107 HP and 169 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km per hour can be completed in 7.5 seconds and 6.9 seconds, respectively.

Regarding battery charging, this car is compatible with chargers all over the world. With a 90 kW charge, the battery can be charged to 80 percent in 40 minutes. Meanwhile, by using a standard charger (200V, 6kW, 30A), the battery can be fully charged in 12 hours.

This electric car is a mid-size SUV that offers a modern and sophisticated exterior design. Customers will be given two choices of steering wheel models, the first is a conventional steering wheel and the second is a wing-shaped steering wheel with a steer-by-wire system.

Then in the multimedia system, bZ4X adopts cloud navigation that uses map information in the cloud to get traffic information and parking availability information in real time. Then it will also feature BEV-specific driver assistance such as a charging station to a driving range display.

Regarding the price, the All New Toyota bZ4X FWD is priced at JPY 6,000,000. Meanwhile, the 4WD model is marketed at a price of JPY 6,500,000.

However, in today’s launch, the Toyota bZ4X is only available for rental and has not been sold to individuals. The move is billed as a strategy that will help ease driver concerns about battery life and resale value.

By incorporating insurance, repair costs and a battery warranty into the deal, Toyota will lease the electric bZ4X sport utility vehicle (SUV) for the equivalent of US$39,000 for the first four years. Cancellations within the first 48 months will incur additional fees.
